Guys if you get this in time its just to let you know that for some reason my password isn't working on Moodle so I can't access the Wiki or Webmail it at the moment. Ill have to try and resolve the matter come Monday.

If theres anything I need to know from the Wiki could one of you post it for me please otherwise I'm just going to go straight ahead with production.

Oh and if there is anything important on Webmail can you tell me that to cause apparently there are no excuses for not being able to access the Webmail...

Just thought I'd post to see how your all doing with your PPD?

I've just uploaded a shot for mine on my blog. Still needs the sound and a texture or two.

What aspect ratio are we going to work in? And can we change the camera angles and stuff to make it more interesting?

I think it'll be better to have it longer than the Sound goes on for as it'll be really rushed if we use it striaght out... let me know what you think.

I've got to say I've been pretty lucky to end up with you guys. It was awesome. I honestly feel we worked super-duper awesomely together and can easily make descicions and work as a team. One challenge we all have to face is the fear of a shit team.

I might not be able to make the curry since I live far, far away in a magical land called Chelmsford so I'll see you guys in 2009.

Okay guys let's not kid ourselves, we might not get this done unless the rendering descides to work. For now we might have to settle for something less.

Dan, when we all left to go home we discussed that on Wednesday we were going to animate a descent, well thought out and nice looking fly-through. We'll have it chugging away on another computer somewhere.

Once that is done we can then continue as normal. What this means is that even if we don't finish our storyboard and don't get all the scenes done we'll at least have a back up hand-in.

It's not what we expected but I don't think we have a choice. This doesn't mean we can't continue with the story, it's just a fail safe.

We are well on our way to making our first group project which I'm sure we are all proud of... I'm sure there will be some tough days ahead and I'm relatively confident that we'll get a little stressed out with rendering... Ok guys...I'm proud to present.... this ugly character.... My guy. I've painted the weights... and it's adequate for the background man :D... I'm no way saying that its a good model but I've weighted it the best I can... theres a few deformations but if you don't push the model to far it'll all be OK! haha. Anyway... I'll let you guys have it next time your in to play with and try and break him :)... hope its ok for you guys.

Hut Done & Progress Update

Finally after several days I have managed to texture the entire hut. All that I need to do to it now is add a light from the inside.

Overall I only have the metal poles at the harbour and the box and barrell storages left to texture then I'm virtually done.

Do you think we'll need to texture it properly as its going to be a silhouette surely we just need to make sure its nice and reflective. NB Alec...when the Telescope is open we'll have to add a plane to reflect the port as I didn't make the LENS before I blend shaped it.... DANG IT!.. when animating him on the boat we'll just WHIP it out so you don't see down the ends!!!

So yeah, was just looking at some games coming out in the near future and one of those is a game called Monster Hunter for the wii! I took two screenshots from the game which i thought were a bit relevant towards our project and had a pirate theme. I'm feeling really ill at the moment. I'm not sure what's caused this but for some reason I have a constant headache and walking around makes me feel really drowsy. Earlier I had some food for the first time in a few hours and was struggling to eat it. The thought of food is a little repulsive. Last night I was shaking and through up a tiny bit.

So yeah....it's sucks. I hope I can come in tommorow but we'll have to see.

Okay, what do you guys think of this?

The original plan is to have the telescope man wave a small light as a signal to the others. Now this might pose a problem because the ship is silhouetted against a bright moon. A small light (from a match or a lantern) will be hard to distinguish against the light. Small lights like that work best against total darkness. It's also one less light we have to work with. We could move the ship but that would fuck up everything. We could animate the light on a layer.

So, the alternative is to have him lower the flag. It should contrast the black and white of the moon and ship and is perfectly plausable for a signal.

I'm undescided. What do you guys want? What's more cool?

Resolutions

First rule of storyboarding is to get the dimensions right. If you're doing a wide-screen film then do a wide-screen storyboard. I made the mistake of doing the storyboard in PAL.

This isn't a big deal because the storyboard panels are rough approximations of the angles so even if it was done to the correct size it wouldn't matter but, as a team, we should have finalized a resolution by now.

So guys, shall we render as a standard PAL or wide-screen or HD?

Considering the extensive amounts of rendering time, we might have to sacrifice the size. For portfolios and stuff we can grab the best bits and render stills in HD.

I do not agree with downloading films illegaly. It's totally unethical and can seriously damage the film industry. It's against the law and you can be fined up to £1000! SO DON'T DO IT!

Anyway, so I'm watching the Hunchback of Notre Dame on youtube and there archetecture is basically the same as our environment. It's pretty amazing actuallly. Watch the film for it's camera shots, it's background imagery, it's buildings and because it's a good film anyway.

Guys... A I'm Guna Try It

I'm....guna try and render a sequence of cloth floating (untexturing) in the Occlusion - just seeing what we can do with it hopefully it'll do over night. I'm doing it as of.....2 mins ago....but it'll take probably an age....so over night I'm thinking it might be done.... I hope. lol but I'll keep you guys informed if anything good comes out of it.

ALEC - do you want me 2 use the sound from my External Hard-drive (I have a LOOOOOOT of sounds on there) and begin to make an animatic with your images .... I brought them home with me but I'd probably start over the weekend?

THIS JUST IN - 10mins for the 1st frame (not including anyone elses frames....Oooooooh boy!) Lets hope those Farmers can shepard us along a bit ayy?

Think...It'll take 30 hours at this rate ( rendering 180 frames)... but I'll see how its doing when I get back from work at about 10ish 2night.

Ok.... it's now 20 past 10 and I'm on ....drum ROLL PLEASE .... Image 44 out of 180! lol And now the maths.

44 frames in 5 hours. 5 hours = 300 mins.

300/44= 6.2 (ish I think...) 6.2 mins per frame then

6.2 x 180 = A little over 1080 mins.

1080 / 60 mins in an hour =.... 18.... 18 hours it should take to render the whole TEST!?

A TEST??! Your kidding me?! lol I think it'll still be going tomorrow when I leave for Uni! haha! Oh well!

Begun the construction of the telescope of which one of our characters is going to use to view the environment and the other character. Used a lattice to distort it and give it a more unusual look...

A New Boat

After some time of manufacturing images of boats i returned to the subject and created a newer version. In this version I wanted to make it look a little more spiky and more sinister. Also the boat will be the vessel from which one of our characters will be using a telescope to follow the other character and scan our entire environment.

As Promised

Yeah I said I'd literally Block it out... did this in about 5mins so excuse the roughness of it lol.

This is a basic run through of what I had in my head (may be different to what other people in the group think but this is what I had as it stands). Ps telescope lens in fish eye or change style?? possibly do in after effects after or we could set it up in Maya.... any thoughts?

Ok... ooo blue writing how odd.... anyway... Theres a ship in the distance and the camera zooms in on this setting the scene. If you don't like this idea go to picture 5 for an alternative opening! lol

Camera pans and looks down over the ship and then settles on the guy in the crows nest (the look out)

Camera focuses on him and he starts looking into the distance as if he's seen something worth noting!!

Maybe he shouts out (LAND HO!)....maybe he just grabs his telescope and looks around the new island he's seen - BAD LOOKOUT! lol

He looks into the eyepiece and has a good old nose around the port!

Looking around the port he can see.... a fair bit - and then he stops looking at the whole thing and the middle of the screen is a boat docking in to the harbour.

'Click Click' Goes the telescope has he zooms in a little bit (modern technology in those medieval times huh?)

Our little pirate spy man acting as lookout on the boat looks through his telescope and see's a man getting off his boat.

He ties up the boat (camera changes to a close up of it and pans up the guy

*missing image of silhouette of man against the dock lights. Walking off towards the ramp....*

This is clearly a stall where a guy is getting some fruit...seen by the lookout...

Down Simons tunnel on the steps he stops and heres an arguement... The lookouts POV (point of view) to begin with and then when our guy stops walking it changes to his POV and see's shadows arguing on the wall from a light in the tunnel!

Our character might get lost....which'll give our lookout the reason to look around our different areas in search of our little fella...bless him he's got nothing better to do other than be a peeping Tom....

He finally gets found and we see our character looking back at the water he's just traveled from and see's the ship that we have our lookout on.... (possibly over shoulder shot...be easier). Character then walks off on his way.

Character continues to interact with different bits of the WORLD and then enters the pub for a quick bevvy.

BLOODY LOVELY!

Thats it so far and I re-iterate....it was a QUICK sketch of the storyboard! lol

New Notion for the Narrative

Earlier today me, Dan and Alec (Simon wasn't able to make the meeting) spoke with Jared and through the talks of ideas and what we plan to achieve we came up with a new idea for a narrative...

We spoke of an idea of a man in the crows nest of the big ship sitting at sea with a telescope. Through him we could show a second-person persecptive of our character walking through the environment as well as a first person perspective of the character within and interacting with the environment.

Through changing between the perspectives we could achieve both an inside view of the environment as well as a wide range view from the man in the crows nest. Also this would mean that certain parts of the animated character could be made less tedious as the character won't always be viewed from close up but rather from a distance and sometimes maybe not even at all for a few seconds.

Here below shows an uncompleted version of our environment and the potential view of the man in the crows nest to see everything on our currently agreed route for the character...

When Dan and Tom left they witnessed a test render of the cobble stone flooring that was less than perfect. When they left I changed to the texture to something more subtle, upped the light bouncin' and added a reflection.

I then changed the purple lights to something that actually represents the night time.

PREPARE TO BE WOWED!

Maybe the head is still too big/not in proportion but either way its a character... not quite finished yet but its getting there. Half Rigged and no weights have been painted as of yet.

Hopefully either tonight when I get home from work or tomorrow morning at uni! It'll come along just fine! Hope you guys like it. Tom built it but I'm just altering/rigging and changing a few bits. As this character will be covered in cloth we may be able to use it again (perhaps just change the head and give him different features) in the scene... save the guy with a new head and then have a whole set of people (obviously making some people smaller and taller)....

NB Dan don't forget to downsize this geezer a tad for Alec's Building size!

Still a bit worried about the narrative... think its a bit weak - might try a little storyboarding session over the weekend as we don't appear to have one up anywhere? I know the basics... Sign on wall for a pub...guys fighting in alley... Fruit stall and eating piece of fruit....

Also we/I have got to get started on the SFX soon... eg water drips and animating swings in lamps and cloths etc.... do we need to finish modeling soon? what do you think guys - only the sooner we finish modeling the texturing fun can begin... and finalise the lighting and so on til its looking "AwwwwwwwYEahhhhhh-able".

Our PPD so far... Love it... Simon you ok with that so far? I've saved the file and I'll work on the colours and stuff tonight... still need to build the storage area in there though. We were working on it today a bit and came up with a few do's and don'ts - we all got a few togther - Alec has them saved on his laptop so we can reference... its guna be a laugh - the quality we like as it looks so bad its good! :D

A Light/Bird Cage and the start of a Stall!

As you can see.... I've been doing bits and bobs for the group. The Stall is not in place as its easier to model on the Grid x=0 y=0 z=0 ... lol. Its a tough life doing down under. haha. Ps cloth is tempremental...sometimes works on my mac....sometimes doesnt....its just loving to crash tho atm so I'm Saving a lot before I do things eg smooth/renders/Cloth (especially cloth) will try and cloth my stall 2mr....hopefully will be more full tomorrow :)

Right lads... First and formost I know we weren't expected in... even though I said I would be I didn't make an appearance today... believe me I've been struggling with Maya - for some reason... I couldn't make cloth here at home and I was trying to sort that... think I've got it now after loading many a plug-in and fiddling with settings ALL over again. In the end I gave up...went back on to maya after a few hours....and now it seems to work. SO I'm guna get cracking again with some modeling!!! HORAY! Again Apoligies for not turning up and the lack of work I've been producing recently as I've been trying to get on top of my Case Study (which I am now)... I aim to get a bit of work done 2night and 2mr morning (providing we don't have any PPD supprises. Either way... I'm back in the business of Authentic-ating the shizzle out of our models!!! Yeahhh step back into reality now and this is the basic story line - Character arrives off boat... see's flyer on wall or lamp post for the pub. Then he makes his way to the pub whilst interacting with the scene. Possibly trip over something on the way to the pub. Pick up an apple and start eating etc.

Just want to say well done guys, so far. Think we have really bonded well and we have learnt so much in maya and about one another through this. Each one of our areas are developing and starting to take shape and be awesome, we have come so far since the beginning looking at the start of the project. Lighting + Prototype Texture

Diamond Windows
Windows are pretty simple to do. All you need is a texture with a grid applied. The grid needs black outlines and orange blocks. Then apply a glow. You'll need to tweek the numbers grid and the amount of glow to get it perfect. To be accurate you'll also need to slap a VolumeLight infront of the window so it's emitting light.

Hollow Windows
If you have an empty space behind a window, like the smalll circular window above or Simon's prison bars, you'll need any light you find appropriate and a glowing plane behind the window. The empty space behind appears dark and casts shadows on itself so a glowing plan will stop this. It's paramount that the plane does not cast or recieve shadows.

The Night Time Lights
Three of night time lights have been increased in intensity and one light that faces the direction of the building is the brightest. This is the most important light since the entire set is built to accomadate this Northerly direction.

The Plaster Texture
A prototype texture has been applied to the lower building. Further experimention is required to perfect it's look. At the moment it's okay but a bit pixelly.

Look at this mother fucker! He makes regular lighting look like the clocks on microwaves.
Today we experimented with ligthing.

By having 4 directional lights pointing in different directions with a dark blue colour and a large shadow resolution provides an adequet night-time light. With the addition of spot-light and volume lights with an orange hue provides this...

...BEAUTIFULL...

Guys.... anyone got a copy of my work on them at the moment - an uptodate version of all of them. Think there's one on the !! at uni. Got a currupt file on my hands at the moment of my latest one... Don't want to do re modeling really. I'm guna delete the bits I'm not going to work on and then just import whatever I do today into the file at uni.... hopefully that Isn't corrupt as well.

This is a basic cloud test ... a very basic cloud test. Alec and I like the idea of keeping the 'blue' fog to add mystery and weirdness. I think its working. Created using multiple set clouds >Cloud3Dapply. let me know what you guys think - if you like if you don't if you want to change the colour etc.
